If you're anything like me you have a drawer, a box or shelf that is filled with your jewellery that becomes a bit of a mess no matter how hard you try to keep it organised!

Not only does your jewellery get scratched and man-handled much more than necessary, I have no idea what's in half the little boxes I hoard and its so hard to find what I want when I want it.

I thought these clear cases would help but then failed to buy more than 2 before the shop I found them in sold out.....

Like me, do you need a simple solution? I've stumbled across a very pretty and ingenious one....

While Gucci was doing it in Milan, Ralph Lauren was rocking it in New York.

Ralph Lauren's Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week collection was devoted to the 1920s, a la The Great Gatsby. There was that louche sportiness via a double-breasted suit and drop-waist dresses, lots of beading and feathers, and the slim, sexy silhouettes favoured by the Daisy Buchanans of the world. The colour palette was an essay in pastel-on-pastel dressing, and the feather-light chiffon gowns, silk bias cut dresses and palazzo pants added to fluidity of the company's vision.

Impossibly pretty and totally dreamy it's safe to say that the folks at Ralph Lauren have done the 20's fashion era proud.

Trends: 1920s, asymmetrical hemlines, drop-waist dresses, strapless styles, pastels.
Colours: Peppermint, pastel pinks and blues, white.
Key Look: Wide leg palazzo pants worn with loose knits, long bias cut silk slip dresses.
Accessories: Turbans, cloche hats, feathered stoles, long layered beads.

I always enjoy watching the slideshows form the world's most famous runways each season. The shows, showing the newest trends from the ingenious heads behind the biggest labels, give us mere mortals a glimpse into what the world will be wearing next.

Spring/Summer 2012 collections were shown in Milan this week with models hitting the catwalk for the big names int he business - Versace, Gucci, Emporio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana.

Catching my eye was the Gucci show and if I were to find a few words to describe the feel.... Hard Core Deco....
With a show that was heavy on metallics and fringe it seems the Roaring 20's are back for good. Drop-waisted, flapper-esque and boyish silhouettes dominated and all that shine allowed the Gucci girls to shimmy down that runway.

I've recently come across the fab website 'At the Movies' an online based store that stocks hundreds of original movie posters up for purchase. To be honest some of the prices made me gasp out loud, the only way I could own some of these beauties if if I got a bank loan but they are simply lovely to admire!

I am always weary of classic movie remakes, they very rarely compare to the original and leave a bitter taste in my mouth. I am however quite excited to hear about one of my all-time favourite movies getting a fresh revamp.

Australian film make,Baz Luhrmann will film a new 3D version of The Great Gatsby in Sydney, with filming beginning last week.

Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures announced the beginning of production on Luhrmann's Australia-based adaptation of "The Great Gatsby," touting stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays Gatsby; Tobey Maguire, who plays Nick Carraway; Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton, who play Daisy and Tom Buchannan.

I'm loving the idea of Leo being the new Jay Gatsby and the gorgeous, all star cast give me hope that this remake will not be a colossal disaster.

It's fantastic news also that this film is being made in Australia... I'm certainly jealous that Sydneysiders may get to glimpse the delicious Leo DiCaprio while he's here!!

Warner Bros is aiming for a November 2012 release.... I can't wait!

I was so saddened to hear that screen legend Dame Elizabeth Taylor died today, she was 79.

Dame Elizabeth, who lived almost her entire life in the spotlight after finding fame as a child star, had been plagued by ill-health for many years. She had been in Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre for several weeks and ultimately passed away today from congestive heart failure.

...: My Little Christmas Tradition :...

When I was about 10 years old I was the proud new owner this little book.

I don't remember how long exactly it took me to get through all 133 pages (it seemed a big novel at that young age!) but I do remember snuggling up in bed and feeling very grown up to be reading my book before going to sleep each night. The book is named 'The Great Christmas Kidnapping Caper' and it was published in January 1975. It was written by Jean Van Leeuwen and illustrated by Steven Kellogg.

It tells the tale of 3 mice - Marvin, Raymonds and Fats who have taken up in comfortable warm residence of Macy's during the Christmas season. When the toy department's Santa Clause gets kidnapped they are on the case in the best manner of old-movie private eyes. The book is narrated by Marvin himself and the fabulous story follows the mice as they attempt to save Santa and rescue Christmas.

This was my favorite book growing up and while I read it a million times when I was young, it now makes an appearance on my bedside table only once a year.... at Christmas. Now at 27 years of age, and at this time of the year, I find myself once again hunting down my tresured christmas story, making a cup of hot chocolate (2 marshmallows) and settling in to read 'The Great Christmas Kidnapping Caper.' What bliss.

Anyone have a favorite Christmas carol?? For the most part I enjoy the sing-along you inevitably have around the christmas dinner table with your crazy Aunt Agatha, who's had a few ports, and your loud, boisterious cousins drinking wine by the cask. And in the spirit of the day/night you can even overlook that even though we hear them every single year no-one seems to ever remember all the words. In this instance carols are fine by me.

What's not ok is when, in the weeks leading up to Christmas, those jolly carols are ALL you hear everywhere you go. Am I the only person who finds them haunting me anywhere I am? The supermarket... standing in line at the bank.... the elevator at the gym.... EVERY store in the whole of the shopping centre?!?

Not only do I find that the music is somewhat manic and the notes of the traditional tunes somewhat ear-piercingly irritating but I find that even after I've left said supermarket/bank/gym/shoppingcentre the last song I heard played is of course now INESCAPIBLY stuck in my head.

Those carols are (unfortunately for me) real catchy little melodies......

I love the simple joy of writing Christmas cards to my nearest and dearest each year. Its one of the yule time traditions that I really adore and look forward to. In those weeks before Christmas, what better pleasure is there than coming home from work (or school or uni or a day out fighting the crowds) than to open your mail box and see a stack of hand written addressed envelopes nestled inside?

A Christmas card means more than the other consumer-driven purchases we are bombarded with at this festive time of the year - do we really need to hundreds of dollars worth of ornaments hanging from our trees? Or $15 gold-embossed wrapping paper that will be shred and disposed of? Must we have the biggest and best display of santas, reindeers, lights and snowmen on our front lawn? That's not what Christmas should be about....

But a piece of card in an envelope? Absolutely. For a Christmas card is not just a piece of stock card paper.... its a wish and a greeting from one person (or family) to another. Its a hug and a kiss. A season's greeting. A merry Christmas. It's a special message conveyed from one person in our world to another- a message that tells us that someone, somewhere, is thinking of us at this wonderful time of the year.

It's been months since I've blogged and I've truly missed the fun and joy of it! I've made some huge life changes lately - predominately that I've moved back to the wonderful and delicious city of Melbourne. I'm in lust with the city and I am tickled pink to be back in it's vibrant clutches.
Plugged in and connected once more the outside world I have so many blogs to visit and catch up on and lots of pictures, wishlists and ramblings to post here on mine..... ooh its so good to be back!

So I wanted to share a fabulous book I've just finished devouring with you all. Truly this is an absolute delight - buy yourself a copy then pass it along to your girlfriends - this is a book destined to be shared. I guarantee it will be enjoyed not only by vintage lovers and fashionistas but by women everywhere.

I have totally fallen in love with this book. I read it over 5 days and stopped often to treasure every amazing illustration and the fairy-tale-esque tale that accompanied each. Author Charlotte Smith shares the story of an inherited collection of dresses that her 'fairy' godmother had passed to her. No ordinary collection, and no ordinary godmother, these pieces each represent extraordinary high-end label, vintage couture. Each page is filled with stories about the dresses illustrated and the women that wore them - truly a fabulous and insightful little book!

I sometimes go through stages where I can search eBay, Etsy and my regular online vintage haunts and see NOTHING that tickles my fancy. I look through and think "Oh well best save my pennies." Then there are those other times when I'm browsing and all of a sudden I think to myself.... so many gorgeous things have caught my eye.... Oh my god I NEED one of those dresses..... I've ALWAYS wanted that blouse in that EXACT color..... If I don't take that dress on Etsy I'm going to have heart failure!

Do you know what I mean? Those times when there are so many pieces you're watching on eBay and you're forever logging on to see how high the bids have gone? Or when you're Etsy Favorites page is in fact 3 pages long, filled with goodies you have hearted??
Well dear readers I'm in fact in this exact position right now - I'm watching 17 auctions on Ebay and I have no less than 27 hearts on items on Etsy. I also have my eye on a truly gorgeous dress over at Blue Velvet Vintage.

So I ask you this: How do you decide what you can and can't have? How do you choose one amazing skirt over a timeless little shift? I obviously can't take them all (although its ridiculous how many time a day I wish I were a spoilt trust-fund brat!) so how do you possibly come to a decision??

I mean clearly I just can't stop and quit cold-turkey on this purchasing "hobby" of mine. I have no intention of simply not buying things at all because that would be ridiculous and I think a way to manage the quantity would be much more sensible and less life changing.

Tiana Pittelle was a famous Hawaii designer with a boutique in Waikiki in the post war era. Her dresses are prized by collectors of vintage Hawaiian clothing. Her prints were confined and only available on her label. She was known for high quality construction and the wonderful details incorporated into her designs.

Vintage Hawaiian dresses are constant and lasting favorites. They are a true sexy style, carefree, and fun to wear. They're ooze elegance but say to the world you are still playful fun! I am so thrilled to own my own Tiana Pittelle sarong cocktail dress.

I have just unpacked the last box that moved with me from Geelong to Cairns. Its labeled 'junk' so I didn't expect much when I tore it open, to my surprise I found my old photography equipment and some framed Polaroid photos I did about 7 years ago.

My fascination with Polaroid Photo Art began about 8 years ago when I stumbled across an old Polaroid Land Camera in a charity shop. I bought it home and googled 'polaroid art' simply out of curiosity. What I found was amazing, ethereal artwork that immediately inspired me to learn more.
Working with a Polaroid camera and experimenting with polaroid art is really exciting and the end result is utterly enchanting. I became interested in not only the beautiful results of simple taking a polaroid picture but also of the alternative polaroid art processes that can be mastered.

Cliff face at Bells Beach - 2003

Each artwork is an original emulsion transfer. I take the photograph with my old land Camera and pull the polaroid film through he roller. The Polaroid photo is immersed in hot water where the surface begins to bubble. The photo is then put it in cool water where I am able to completely remove the emulsion from the plastic backing and transfer it onto watercolor paper. Because the final results of each image cannot be duplicated, no two works are exactly alike.

I create each piece by hand, using only materials of the highest quality. I want each piece of artwork to last as long as possible, so all materials are acid free and each image is sprayed with UV resistant spray to help prevent fading.

POLAROID PHOTOGRAPHS

This set of polaroid photos below, was completed in 2004. I awoke to a chilly, foggy morning and these photos were taken in the fog just after dawn at a horse stud not far from where I used to live. The fog and near darkness created a really moody, dreamlike atmosphere in which I was able to capture these beautiful animals.

This set was taken on a really clear, crisp day along the bay of Geelong where I spotted a lone fisherman at the end of the pier. The light captured in these photos make them almost appear to be paintings - the shadows on the pier appeared to be painted to the old wooden planks and the bay's water was dead still. I love this set and plan to hang them in the dining room.

Unearthing these photos and my old camera (wrapped haphazardly in an old tea towel!) has unleashed a passion to begin photography again. Polaroids capture an unmistakable atmosphere onto the film that isn't found in our world of digital photography very often - you feel as if you can almost touch the objects on the film. I think they're breathtaking.

I'm so in love with my new hometown - I love the warm weather every single day and when the sun is shining I feel so much happier and cheerful! We are a water city and yet we are surrounded by the most beautiful mountains.
My partner and I spend most weekends swimming in the crystal clear waters or we drive just 30 minutes and we have our choice of 3 magic beach coves to relax at.
It's heaven.

The one and ONLY problem I've found since my move to Far North Queensland is that my wardrobe is totally wrong for the tropics! I just love my vintage wool suits, silk scarves and my 60's mustard leather boots... I can't bear to part with my winter clothes so I have reluctantly stored them away for future use (or when I travel back to Victoria for visits!)
By wardrobe looks unusually bare now, I haven't seen it so empty in YEARS.
This is however, not exactly a problem for a shopping-loving girl such as myself as now I get to stock up on lots of summer clothing to suit my new climate.
To start with I hit Vintage Heaven hot spot ETSY and snagged some amazing summer dresses to keep me cool and comfortable in sunny Cairns.

If any of you are like me I religiously scroll Etsy about 3 times a week. I love Etsy, it's such as haven for me since in Australia much less awesome vintage. So apart from the gorgeous warm weather that Far North Queensland has to offer, I must admit it wasn't the BIGGEST reason I decided to pack up home and move 4,000 kilometers to the top of Australia. The biggest and most exciting reason is that I am following my career dreams.... I'm going to become an Events & Wedding Planner.
I have been organising parties and celebrations for the last 3 or 4 years and have thought many, many times about how great it would be to do what I love for a living. Now is my chance and I'm going to grab it with both hands. I'm about to begin an accreditation course with a company called Dynamic Weddings and I am so unbelievably excited!

Now I want to make a good impression. I want to appear capable and stylish and creative. I want to feel confident and fabulous during my training days and I think I know the perfect way to achieve this... I'll buy myself some gorgeous Vintage pieces to wear!

A few months back I began using the right sidebar of my blog to share some of my favorite snaps from couture and vintage photographers. This is a post regarding the first set that were by renonwned photographer Mark Shaw (1922-1969). Shaw only graced our earth for 47 years but he accomplished works that few of his peers and future followers will ever hope to achieve.

Shaw is best known for his phtographs of the Kennedy family, which he originally shot for LIFE magazine. Having developed a strong friendship with both John and Jackie Kennedy, he became the Kennedy's unofficial family photographer and captured many of the future famous moments of the popular family's life.

Shaw began working for LIFE magazine in 1952 and shot many, many celebrities in his 16 years with the magazine. He was also photorapher to numerous advertising campaigns and couture photo shoots throughtout his career.

The Gingerbread House

While browsing at a local antique shop recently, I was drawn to this lovely bone china Gingerbread House. Knowing the maker's name Coalport and finding out (from the shop owner) it was part of a collection I snapped it up and brought it home.

I thought to myself it would be great to have something special to collect - I love the fun of hunting down and chasing a certain something to add to a collection. I keenly jumped on the net and delved into a bit of research in the hopes of learning a little more about my new treasure and the collection it is part of.

These beautiful bone china cottages are a collection introduced by renowned English company COALPORT in 1964. The are each hand-painted and modelled by hand. They are intricate, delicate and very pretty. So far so good I thought until.....

I found a great website (replacements.com) that had info and photos of other pieces in the set and I soon discovered that there are SO MANY COTTAGES to collect! I'm not kidding - there are probably 100 pieces to this collection! I had to laugh, my intentions were innocent but I don't think I can afford to pursue this particular hobby!

Fellow vintage blogger Maria over at Vintage Suburbia mentioned just the other day that she was on the hunt for a vintage 40's Lilli Ann suit. Her admission tweeked a memory of seeing some truly fabulous suits over at Unique Boutique New York. I thought I would pop over there and post some of their goodies for Maria's and others eyes to behold and admire.

DESIGNER LABEL - LILLI ANN HISTORY:

The year is 1933; the location is San Francisco, California. A clothing company named Lilli Ann is born and created by Adolph Schuman, and is named for his wife Lillian. The company quickly grew in popularity and was widely known for their beautiful, elaborately designed suits and coats. Their suits from the 1940's reflect the trends of that era; jacket silhouettes included fitted waistlines and often had hip peplums.

The company's image as the provider of elegance and high fashion wool suitings was keenly promoted by owner Schuman, their target customer being sophisticated and smart. Teir designs and the quality of their pieces truly and clearly reflects that.

Adolph Schuman died in 1985, his heirs continued the direction of the company until the 1990's when it was sold and closed soon after.

Today Lilli Ann suits are heavily sought after, some going for astronomical amounts at auctions around the globe. The options for us mere vintage-loving mortals is far more limited but with a keen eye and a decent amount of $$$ to spare, the impossible can in fact be made possible.

There's an odd shaped horse and... ahhh is that a cat? A lion? And is it standing on a circus box??
Hmm... And what's going on with these peoples' faces?
Do they look just a little bit creepy to anyone else?? I'm finding them a little chilling and frightening and not at all spring-time happy as the beautiful color of the skirt might imply.

There is nothing more exciting for me than DISCOVERING an online shop I have not known. Recently I somehow found my way to Wallflower Vintage and let me tell you I was so IMPRESSED with this site. Its so easy to navigate, the clothing comes in a variety of REAL sizes (not just extra small - yay!) and there are sooooo many gorgeous items to own. I'm a big fan of buying from American shops as the quality and huge range of pieces available far exceeds Australia's vintage offerings. Wallflower Vintage is true HEAVEN for my keen eyes - I spent hours on this site looking at just about EVERY single item! There are over 750 products in the DRESS section alone, over 200 in OUTERWEAR and over 300 in SEPARATES so BE WARNED you need some time to get through all the stunning items!

I've just returned from 12 glorious days in Cairns, in far North Queensland.
Pure bliss..... Gorgeous sunshine..... Frozen strawberry daquiris..... Lazy poolside afternoons....

Everything about Cairns is amazing: the beaches, the rainforests, the waterfalls, the city, the nightlife and the mountains.... what a perfect destination. I loved every minute!

A friend of mine asked me the other day why I chose "Countess de Vintage" as my blog's title. I didn't really have an answer, only that while watching Kristen Dunst in Marie Antoinette there was a character named Countess Emilie of somethingrather! and I thought she sounded quite elegant! Anyway hence began a conversation of royal and court titles, their rank of coolness and a debate about whether it would be to uppity to introduce yourself as 'Lady this' or 'Countess that'.
From this conservation we came the following conclusions:

We agreed that Duchess and Countess sounded cooler than Baroness or Lady
The titles Viscountess and Marquess were mispronunciation train wrecks waiting to happen
The Imperial title of Empress would be fantastic
We would both feel a little silly actually using a title except and excluding times when you're attempting to book a table at a really really popular restaurant or getting your name on a waiting list for a Gucci bag

WHAT IS A COUNTESS ANYWAY??

The word count came into English from the French comte. Comte came from Latin comes - in its accusative comitem - meaning companion and later 'companion of the emperor'.
A 'Countess" is the wife of a count or earl, or the title used by a women who holds the title (or earldom) in her own right. When a woman marries a count or earl, she will receive a "courtesy title" of Countess. A courtesy title is a form of address in systems of nobility used by wives, children and other close relatives of a peer. These styles may mislead those unacquainted with the system into thinking that they have substantive titles.

The ranks of the English peerage are Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount, and Baron.
The nobility title of Countess may only became a substantive title only when it is held by someone (normally by one person alone), which they gained through either grant or inheritance, as opposed to one given or loaned to them either as a courtesy title, or gained through marriage. I think it might actually be fascinating to do some history research and perhaps post some profiles of famous and interesting Countesses. Let the research begin!

..: Vintage Birthday Cards - PART 1 :..

This morning I took to the BORING and long overdue task of sorting out a BUNCH of random boxes I've had sitting in my cupboards for god knows how long. You know the space where all those odds and ends, bibs and bobs, old bills, magazines, markers, and things you THOUGHT you MUST keep and now have no idea why you wanted/needed to? That's what these boxes are to me - the place where things go to be dealt with LATER.
So I'm sorting into piles all sorts of uninteresting bits and pieces when I stumble upon an unmarked manila folder that's been stapled shut. Hmm... I wonder to myself why on earth I would do that and what's IN THERE?!

To my surprise I've found a long ago purchase I made of some smashing childrens vintage birthday cards form the 60's era. HOW EXCITING I think to myself - how could I have simply forgotten I had these fabulous cards?? I've scanned them on the computer and in 2 Parts I'll share them with you. I've realised how different kids cards are today, many now simply feature famous characters - Thomas the Tank, Bob the Builder, Barbie etc. I think these cards though are so sweet and innocent. The messages are so heartfelt also! Let me know your opinion on the matter on vintage versus new cards - it would be interesting to hear what others think.

SPACE ADVENTURE

The Cover - it hasn't showed up when scanned but the 10 is gold foil paper

The Inside - The two middle guys are a pop up feature.
If you can't read the inscription it says:

The Cover - the large 8 is a brown indented paper

The Inside - amazing colored scene taking up both sided of the card

The Cover - the tan colored spaces are actually a gold shimmer that was used a lot in these earlier cards.

The Cover - there is glitter on the number 9 and the tv set border that has not shown up on the scanner

My favorite movie as a kid was without a doubt "Adventures in Babysitting" made in 1987.
The basic plot: Teenager Chris Parker (Elisabeth Shue) would rather party with her boyfriend, but when her beau breaks their date she reluctantly accepts a babysitting job. It isn't all TV and icebox-raiding when Chris' best friend Brenda (Penelope Ann Miller) calls her to announce that she's stranded at the bus station. With her youthful charges in tow (one of whom, 15-year-old Brad (Keith Coogan), has a hopeless crush on the babysitter), Chris heads into downtown Chicago to go to Brenda's rescue. Thus begins a roller coaster ride of comic mishaps, unexpected perils and hairbreadth escapes. (From Moviefone).
It's fun, lovable, and full of classic comedy - I adore it and if you haven't seen it PLEASE treat yourselves and watch it!

So the reason I must share my somewhat embarrassing admission to loving one of the cheesiest films ever made? Well I was surfing Etsy this morning instead of writing my latest paper for business class (as you do) when I came across an item that stopped me in my tracks.
I was speechless.
I was dumbstruck.
I thought to myself "No. It couldn't be, could it?"
Then aloud I said "My God but what if it is??!"
Calmly I went to Google and did a quick image search.
Then I was more than a little bit EXCITED when I found some obscure site had posted the opening sequence of the film! (to view the hilarious first scene click here).

In the opening scene Chris is dancing around her bedroom, and rather dorkily singing into her bedhead at one point, getting ready for her hot date that will never be. Now paying particular attention to the dress & check out these first scene stills:
